Several months ago, on picking up my daughter from school, I decided to pick some apples from one of the apple trees that were laden with fruit. The ground was covered with rotten fruit which I tipped toed around to reach ones on the tree. That week I did not buy the package that I normally buy from the supermarket. I must admit the type I picked was not my favourite type, but I put them to good use by making a smoothie after picking out the tiny infestation of protein.
I used the other three apples to make an apple pie that although was messy and not easy on the eyes, it tasted just as good the one I normally would buy from the food store but without the additives.
This got me thinking….
- We can use the abundant local seasonal fruit to meet more of our food requirements which will assist in reducing the large percentage of food that is imported from other countries.
- Additionally, we need to develop or expand local cottage industries to make a variety of food stuffs like ciders, jams, crumbles, etc.
- Make a concerted effort to supply home-made food products in existing high street shops, farmers markets or even supermarket supply chains
